Juan Carlos Mortensen was born in Amboato, Ecuador, on April 13, 1972. His mother is Spanish and his father is Danish. He has two brotheres and three sisters. After living in Ecuador for 15 years, the Carlos family moved to Madrid, Spain, where Carlos enjoys dual citizenship.
Carlos started playing poker in Madrid. He was a bartender at a private club called Montera when some locals started up a game there and Carlos joined in one day. Carlos lost $100 but he stayed up all night thinking about the game and the mistakes he had made. He came back the very next day and doubled his money; from there on out he was a consistant winner at that game until it dried up because Carlos was too succesful and nobody wanted to play him anymore.
Carlos Mortensen is very soft spoken at the table, but he is a very aggresive player. Carlos believes that poker is a "people game" played with cards, not just a card game played by people. He says he believes that all players have limits, or situations where they become uneasy, and that's when he puts them to the test.
Carlos Mortensen won the World Series of Poker's main event in 2001. He outlasted 612 other players to win the tournament. Carlos has also won 2004 L.A. Poker Classic NL Hold 'Em event; the 2003 WSOP Limit Hold 'Em event; and the 2001 L.A. Poker Classic Limit Event.
Carlos now resides in Las Vegas, Nevada and is happily married to his wife Cecilla.
