Daniel Negreanu was born on July 26, 1974 in Toronto, Canada. Daniel's parents immigrated from Romania just before he was born. His father was an electrician, and he passed away in 1996. His mother was a homemaker. She used to make baglunches for Daniel and his older brother. To this day she still bags a lunch for Daniel before he heads out to the poker tables.
When Daniel was 16 years old he started playing pool and betting on sports in local pool halls. He began playing poker in private clubs and local charity casinos. Once Daniel started playing poker, he got he got “the bug,” and within two months he was playing serious and doing quite well.
When Daniel turned 21 he moved to Las Vegas, but he quickly found out the game in Vegas wasn’t as easy to beat as the game in Toronto. He went broke a few times before he started to succeed.
Daniel says that he never really set out to become a professional poker player. He stated that one day when he was 22, he just woke up and thought to himself “hey, this is what I’m doing for a living.” At that point he decided to make a serious commitment to play poker.
At age 23, Daniel became the youngest player to win a World Series bracelet by winning the pot-limit tournament in 1998. He now has six World Series bracelets to his name.
Since 1997 Daniel has won more tournaments than any other player, and has won over $4.2 million in tournament winnings. In 2004 he was named ESPN’s PLAYER OF THE YEAR and also the World Poker Tour runner up player of the year.
Daniel writes poker articles for Card Player Magazine, and is also an instructor at Poker School Online. He also wrote a chapter in Doyle Brunson’s book "Super System 2."
Daniel is a huge hockey fan and his favorite team is the Maple Leafs. You will often see him wearing hockey jerseys at the poker table.
