The Pros: Doyle Brunson
![]()
Doyle Brunson was born in Longworth, Texas on August 10, 1933. He graduated with a Master's Degree in Education. Doyle was also a very good athlete in college and he was drafted by the NBA's Lakers (back then known as the Minneapolis Lakers). An injury prevented him from pursuing a career in athletics so Doyle was forced to find a different line of work.
In the 50's Doyle started playing poker in the underground circuit and on college campuses. He then moved up to private games which involved very high stakes. He played these high-stake games in the part of town where you had to worry about getting robbed, arrested, or cheated.
During this time Doyle met Amarillo Slim and Sailor Roberts, and they were all traveling partners. Doyle and Amarillo would stay up all night long talking about poker strategy. They would also deal each other thousands of hands, and would come up with odds, certain strategies, or anything they could come up with to give themselves an advantage over other players.
Doyle says that now days with computers people can come up with the same statistics that he spent thousands of hours coming up with.
In the early 1960's Doyle married his sweetheart Louise. They had four children together Todd (another succesful poker player), Pam, Cheryl, and Doyla. They lost Doyla when she was just 18. Doyle says that he thinks about her every single day, but says that he's at peace with God, and knows that he will be with her again someday.
In 1976 and 1977 Doyle won back to back World Series of Poker Championships. Amazingly enough, he won both tournaments with the same hand: a full house with 10's over 2's. This coincidental incident has given the hand 10-2 a famous nickname: "The Doyle Brunson."
Doyle wrote the book "Super System," which is considered by many to be the bible of poker. Doyle says that so many people read the book that he had to change the way he played because it seemed that everyone knew his tricks!
Doyle Brunson has won nine gold bracelets at the World Series of Poker, which ties him for the most wins with Johnny Chan and Phil Helmuth Jr.
Doyle plays in the highest stake games in the world on a daily basis.
