Professional tournament poker player Gavin Smith was born in Ontario, Canada in 1968. Currently based in Las Vegas, he has an impressive record in big buy-in tournaments.
A card player from his childhood through Cribbage and Gin-Rummy games with his father, Gavin Smith was introduced to poker in 1994 at the age of 26 via a traveling charity poker tournament. Soon hooked on the game, Smith had stints as both a poker dealer and owner of a private poker club.
Gavin Smith turned professional in 1998 – his breakthrough came two years later when he won two events in the Foxwoods Casino Poker Finals in the year 2000. Initially bankrolled by friend and fellow tournament professional Erik Lindgren, Smith’s successes have accumulated every year since, including many prestigious WPT and WSOP cashes.
Gavin Smith’s biggest win to date came in the WPT event the ‘Mirage Poker Showdown’ in 2005. His first place finish earning him a cool $1.1 Million.
At the tables Gavin Smith combines a wild and aggressive playing style with a ‘comical’ image and table talk. His strong intuitive feel for the strength of his opponents hands, combined with strong post-flop skills, make him a formidable opponent. The fact that Smith has a bachelors degree in Economics also suggests a strong under-lying grasp of the math involved in the game.
Smith also plays poker online and is currently a member of the Full Tilt Poker team of professionals. You can find Gavin Smith online at Full Tilt Poker under the name ‘Birdguts’.
More recently Gavin Smith has expanded his activities to include the poker media. First as a co-host of Cardplayer Magazines radio show ‘The Circuit’ and more recently via the internet TV channel RawVegas. The TV show is called ‘prop bets’ and features fellow tournament professional Joe Sebok.
